Prom car ideas that beat a stretch limo

Prom arrivals have moved on from stretch limos. The best ones now are the ones that look different in the photographs — and the ones parents feel comfortable with.

Ideas worth booking

  • VW camper — retro, colourful, brilliant for group photographs and far cheaper per head than a supercar
  • Classic car — a Beetle or Mustang gives a real film-poster arrival
  • Vintage bus — the whole friendship group arrives together, which is usually the actual goal
  • Supercar — the most expensive per minute, and often just a 200-metre drive
  • Tractor, ice-cream van or fire engine — memorable, and schools tend to love them

What it costs

Prom hire is generally shorter and cheaper than weddings: expect £150–£350 for a characterful vehicle for a local pick-up and arrival. Split between four friends, a camper often works out at the price of a couple of taxi fares.

Questions for parents to ask

  • Is the vehicle insured for hire and reward, and can I see the certificate?
  • Is the driver licensed and experienced with young passengers?
  • Will the driver wait until my child is safely inside the venue?
  • What is the exact pick-up address, time and contact number?
  • Is there a written booking confirmation?

Timing it right

Prom season in Lancashire runs late June to mid-July and the good vehicles go by Easter. Book pick-up 45 minutes before the arrival slot, and agree a photo stop somewhere better than a school car park.

The photographs everyone keeps are the ones taken before anyone got in the car.

Prom hire with Edna

We do a small number of proms each year around Blackburn, Preston, Burnley and the Ribble Valley. Rob drives, parents get a direct point of contact, and everyone gets as many photographs as they want. See prom hire for details.

Common questions

How much does a prom car cost in the UK?+

Typically £150–£350 for a local pick-up and arrival with a characterful vehicle. Supercars and stretch limos sit above that; shared campers and classics below.

When should we book a prom car?+

By March or April. Lancashire prom season is late June to mid-July and the most distinctive vehicles go first.

Can several friends share one prom car?+

Yes — Edna carries four passengers plus the driver, which is the most common group size and makes it very affordable per person.
